How fast can your brand double your money?

Every brand, at its core, is a money machine that converts ideas into profits.

This machine starts with ideas which turn into designs, designs into Purchase Orders, cash into inventory, and then inventory into profits.

There are some more details in between those steps of course but that's basically it.

Now, how fast can this cycle be?

A typical flow for an apparel brand moving at decent speed might be:

  • 1 week to design some products
  • 1 month to dial in an approved sample
  • 2 months to complete the production run
  • 1 week to sell the inventory

In this example it takes 3 months and 2 weeks to convert an idea into profits.

Let's assume this product has 50% gross profit margins on landed cost, inclusive of freight shipping and tariffs.

You have effectively doubled your money in 3 months' time.

Repeat this cycle perfectly with 100% reinvestment over a year and you've hit 4x doubles; in other words, 2^4, or 16 times your money in the course of a year.

Now, take those gross profit margins and bump them up to 67% (1/3) – tripling your money on each turn of the cycle. That puts you at 3^4, or 81 times your money over a year.

It's an outrageous growth rate. By itself, sounds more like software growth in the mid 2010's, or AI startups in the 2020's, than a consumer product company. This is what's possible when executing a brand growth playbook correctly.

Sure, there are other operating costs and capital constraints to scaling. You probably can't reinvest 100% of your revenues. Cashflow gets tied up in other parts of the business. Partial sellthrough ages inventory. Shipping costs. Etc. But this is the shape of the growth curve on topline. Profits follow.

Most brands with a good product mix (*excl. true luxury & IP moats) should have gross profit margins between 50% and 75%. More than 75% and you don't offer enough quality for the price. Less than 50%, and you're giving up too much margin in your pricing. That's the sweet spot where the math works.

So how fast can you double your money with a brand?

If you dial in your development-production-sellthrough cycle, pretty damn quickly.
